Each student has counselors who are eager to help in solving personal or school problems. Students should not hesitate to seek the assistance of their counselor.
Guidance services may include
• Assistance in planning future education • Student Advocate • Interpretation of test scores • Occupational Information
• Career information • Help in improving study skills • Scheduling assistance • Help with home, school or social concerns
A student desiring to talk with a counselor can do so during a free period or with permission from their current teacher. Students must have a pass to come to the office. If the counselor is unavailable, the students are encouraged to leave a message and the counselor will call the student down as soon as possible. We encourage parental involvement to facilitate academic success.
If you wish to meet with the counselor to discuss issues which may be affecting your child’s education, please call ahead to schedule an appointment and the counselor will arrange a meeting with the team teachers. Students will be assigned a counselor based on the team of teachers with whom the child is involved. The counselor collaborates with the team to best meet the educational needs of the child.
Address Changes: (Important) No longer done in school buildings
Because most of our communication to parents is based on home mailings, it is very important to have the correct physical and mailing address for a student in the Rome City School District. If you have any changes, please notify the district’s Student Registration office at (315)338-6569 or in person at 409 Bell Road, Rome, NY.
Working Papers
Students seeking a working certificate may obtain an application from the Guidance Office. • Application forms need to be fully completed with parent/guardian signature • Bring completed application to the school nurse
The Nurse will sign off if a physical has already been completed OR an appointment will be scheduled for a physical
• The student needs to bring paperwork back to nurse for verification after their physical has been completed.
After the application has been filled out and the school nurse has verified that a physical has been completed, the student needs to bring forms to Guidance Office. (Completed paperwork can be dropped off anytime.)
• The working papers will be processed and can be picked up after 2:00 p.m.
Homework Requests
If your child is absent due to illness, homework can be requested on the 2nd day of absence by calling the Guidance Office Secretary prior to 8:30 a.m. Messages can be left on voicemail if the call comes in prior to the school day.
Homework can be picked up in the Guidance Office after 2:15 p.m. If another student is picking up the work, arrangements must be made in advance by the family with the other student. The parent or guardian must designate the individual who will be responsible for picking up the homework assignments and for collecting books from the student’s locker, if needed. School office personnel will not give out locker combinations to anyone other than parents or guardians.
Initial Response Team (IRT)
Concerns about academic performance, attendance issues or emotional, social or behavior problems will be discussed by the Initial Response Team (IRT), a group of teachers, counselors, social worker(s), administrators and other appropriate school personnel, in an attempt to resolve the problem(s). Parents or school personnel may make referrals to the IRT.
